ICYMI - Star-Ledger Editorial Board Endorses Andy Kim for Senate
MOORESTOWN N.J. – Today, The Star-Ledger Editorial Board announced they have endorsed Congressman Andy Kim, New Jersey’s Democratic nominee for the United States Senate, “without reservation”.
The full endorsement article can be read HERE.
Highlights from the endorsement include:
Andy Kim… has the experience, the character, and the knowledge of the issues to be an effective senator on day one. He is solidly within the mainstream and has carried a congressional district where Trump won – twice.
Bashaw is trying to characterize him as an insider, but that’s dead wrong. Kim is the guy who disrupted the old machine-style political system in New Jersey by beating First Lady Tammy Murphy, the machine choice, and by filing a lawsuit that killed the power of the machines to control primary elections with a rigged ballot.
Kim has devoted his life to public service, as a Rhodes Scholar who served in Afghanistan – advising two commanders of U.S. forces, Gen. David Petraeus and Gen. John Allen – and later as a point man for the White House on Iraq issues. For Bashaw to diminish that by calling him a career bureaucrat is an insult.
This choice is clear. Kim has a thorough knowledge of all these issues and a PhD in foreign policy in a dangerous time, and Bashaw struggles to even describe his positions on several key issues. He wants us to trust him that he’ll learn it once he gets to Washington, and that’s too much to ask. We endorse Kim, without reservation.
Curtis Bashaw has endorsed Trump and would strengthen the Republican hold on the Senate if he were to win. If Bashaw takes a blue state like this, Republicans will surely take control, putting a MAGA conservative back in power, and giving Trump a stronger hand to do his mischief.
…Bashaw himself is a deeply flawed candidate…he has no experience in elective office, and no command of the most important issues he would face in the Senate. In addition, he’s contorting himself to try to explain his endorsement of Trump, resulting in some truly muddled sophistry.
Take abortion. He calls himself pro-choice, but he supports the Supreme Court’s decision that stripped away that right and allowed states to ban abortion altogether…
And by supporting Trump, he’s opening the door to the prospect of three more conservative justices, raising the serious risk of a ban on abortion nationwide, based on the theory that life begins at conception, as Alabama’s state Supreme Court just ruled. That would also ban fertility treatments like IVF. Bashaw is not pro-choice, no matter how he tries to spin this.
…[Bashaw] hasn’t done his homework. Asked if he’d support Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, the mega-bill that charted a new course on climate and cut prescription drug costs, Bashaw said, “I don’t know enough about it to say whether I would have voted for it.” It was the same when we asked about the recent bipartisan bill that would have sent billions of dollars to secure the border: “The details of the bill I don’t really know,” he said.
